Why Neurofeedback and Psychotherapy?
Because trauma often changes brain functioning. However, humans have neuroplasticity. This means our brains can learn to function better and support our healing. Neurofeedback speaks directly to the brain (our hard-wiring) and psychotherapy brings the mind (thinking and beliefs) along. When used together, individuals may speed up the healing process and experience more profound change. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk writes about the power of neurofeedback and psychotherapy in his book, The Body Keeps The Score.
Please watch the videos linked below, read Bessel's book or his chapter on neurofeedback. Dr. Chandra, a psychiatrist in Maryland, provides an easy to understand and extensive explanation of neurofeedback. See the link below. |
What is Neurofeedback?
A form of biofeedback that works with brainwaves. Sensors are placed on the scalp that read your brainwaves. This data is fed to a computer program where the clinician then coaches the brain away from dysfunction by providing rewards (auditory or visual) for preferred functioning. Essentially, your brain engages in a game where it learns better regulatory processing. It is operant conditioning, much like clicker training with dogs. A course of treatment is between 20 and 40 sessions. Neurofeedback is not covered by insurance in the state of Idaho, as it is still considered an emerging intervention in psychotherapy. However, this is not the case in all states. For example, Nevada recently began covering neuro-feedback for Medicaid clients. Please see the links below for more in-depth information.
